Ravens are closely associated with Brân the Blessed, a Welsh god whose name translates to “raven.” According to legend, Brân’s head was buried beneath Tower Hill in London as a talisman to protect Britain from invasion. This myth is believed to be the origin of the tradition of keeping ravens at the Tower of London.
In Celtic mythology, ravens were linked to the Morrigan, an Irish goddess who appeared as a raven on battlefields, symbolizing fate and death. Similarly, they were seen as protectors and prophetic figures.
In heraldry, ravens symbolize wisdom, longevity, and cunning. They are often depicted as sable (black) birds on coats of arms.
The raven is associated with intelligence and loyalty.
The ravens at the Tower of London are iconic symbols of British lore. A legend states that if the ravens leave the Tower, the Crown and Britain will fall. This belief was reinforced during World War II when Winston Churchill ensured their presence despite bombings.
Historically, wild ravens were common in London but later required official care at the Tower due to urban changes. Their presence is now maintained by the Ravenmaster.
