The Meaning
A Nosy Parker is someone who pries into other people's affairs — an inquisitive busybody with an insatiable appetite for gossip, details, and other people's business. It's not quite an insult. In fact, in Britain, being called a Nosy Parker is often said with a fond roll of the eyes. You're nosy, yes, but you're delightfully so.
Where Does It Come From?
The origins are pleasingly murky — as befits a phrase about people who dig into things they probably shouldn't.
The most popular theory points to Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury under Queen Elizabeth I in the 16th century. Parker was famously zealous in his investigations into the conduct of clergy and churches — so much so that his contemporaries considered him insufferably nosy. Whether or not this is truly the origin, it's a satisfying story.
Another theory suggests it's simply a rhyming play on the word nose — as in, poking your nose into other people's business — with "Parker" added as a surname for comic effect, in the great British tradition of giving nicknames to personality types.
The phrase is first recorded in print in the early 20th century, appearing in British postcards and popular slang of the Edwardian era, when being a curtain-twitcher was practically a national sport.
